The Grey Matters

Narrated By An-Nu'man bin Bashir : I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'Both legal and illegal things are evident but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and most of the people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these suspicious things saves his religion and his honor. And whoever indulges in these suspicious things is like a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it. (O people!) Beware! Every king has a Hima and the Hima of Allah on the earth is His illegal (forbidden) things. Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart. [Bukhaari: Vol 1, Book 2. Belief. Hadith 049]

The Authority Of Abu Hurairah : I heard the messenger of Allah say : "What I have forbidden to you, avoid; what I have ordered you [to do], do as much of it as you can. It was only their excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their prophets that destroyed those who were before you."
[Related bu Bukhari and Muslim.]

The Authority Of Al-Hasan bin Ali, grandson of the messenger of Allah : I memorized from the messenger of Allah his saying : "Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt."
[Narrated by Tirmidhi and Nasa’ee, and Tirmidhi said it is true and fine hadith.]

Hypothetically, of course.

Whenever asked about a matter, Zayd b. Thâbit – Allah be pleased with him – would himself ask, “Has this happened?” If they told him that the matter had not yet occurred he would not inform them of an answer, but if they told him it had happened he would answer them.

Beautify your home with al-Qur'aan

It is reported that ‘Abdullâh b. Mas’ûd – Allâh be pleased with him – said:

The house in which the Qur’ân is not recited is like a derelict house that has no one to maintain it. It is also reported that he said: Verily the emptiest of houses are those that are empty of the Book of Allâh.

It is reported that Abû Hurayrah – Allâh be pleased with him – used to say about the house in which the Qur’ân is recited:
It becomes spacious for its inhabitants, the good of it becomes plentiful, the angels come to it and the devils leave it. And the house in which the Qur’ân is not recited becomes cramped for its inhabitants, has little good in it, and the devils come to it.

Forever chasing forgiveness

Vol 8, Book 75. Invocations. Hadith 318.

Narrated By Shaddad bin Aus : The Prophet said "The most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is: 'Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, Anta Khalaqtani wa ana abduka, wa ana 'ala ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu, A'udhu bika min Sharri ma sana'tu, abu'u Laka bini'matika 'alaiya, wa Abu Laka bidhanbi faghfirli innahu la yaghfiru adhdhunuba illa anta." The Prophet added. "If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise."

Translation: “O Allaah You are my Lord, there is none worthy of worship in truth except You, You created me and I am Your slave and I am abiding to Your covenant and promise as best as I can, I seek refuge in You from the evil that I have committed, I profess to you my sins and I acknowledge Your favour upon me,
so forgive me verily no one forgives sins except you.”

"Certainly, I Run the Affairs of My Slaves..."

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said, “Allah `azza wa jall said: ‘Verily, from amongst My slaves is he whose faith cannot be rectified except by being inflicted with poverty, and were I to enrich him, it would surely corrupt him. Verily, from amongst My slaves is he whose faith cannot be rectified except by wealth and affluence, and were I to deprive him, it would surely corrupt him. Verily, from amongst My slaves is he whose faith cannot be rectified except by good health, and were I to make him sick, it would surely corrupt him. Verily, from amongst My slaves is he whose faith cannot be rectified except by disease and illness, and were I to make him healthy, it would surely corrupt him. Verily, from amongst My slaves is he who seeks worship by a certain act but I prevent that from him so that self-amazement does not enter his heart. Certainly, I run the affairs of My slaves by My Knowledge of what is in their hearts. Certainly, I am the All-Knower, All-Aware.‘” [Reported by al-Tabarani]

Wisdom of 'Umar (ra)

It is reported that ‘Umar b. Al-Khattâb – Allâh be pleased with him – said:

Whoever exposes himself to suspicion, let him blame only himself for whoever suspects him. He who covers his secret is in a position to choose [to correct himself].Assume the best about your brother until what comes to you from him overcomes you [and you have to change your opinion].
Never do you pay back someone who disobeys Allâh in his dealings with you with the likes of obeying Allâh in your dealings with him.Take righteous brothers [as friends]; acquire them in plenty, for they are a beautification in prosperity and an aid during calamity. Do not ask about what has not yet happened until it actually happens, for what has happened is enough of an occupation to worry about what has not happened.
Let not your speech be given freely except to those who want to hear it and will value it.
Do not seek help in fulfilling a need you have except from someone who wants success for you in that endeavor. Do not consult except people who fear Allâh, and do not accompany the sinner, [lest]  you learn his sinfulness. And be humble at the graves.

Abû Dâwûd, Kitâb Al-Zuhd article 89.

Being Pre-occupied with the Hizbees

Q: Some of the small students of knowledge have become obsessed with speaking about Hizbees, such that it takes up the majority of their time, and have ceased to seek knowledge, that which will benefit them with their Lord, and likewise that which distinguishes the good from the bad. [They have become obsessed in pre-occupying themselves] in order that they may become acquainted with the mistakes of the Hizbees. As a matter of fact, they do not have any other concern except knowing about “What is your opinion about such and such a person?” And, “What is your opinion about such and such a person?” And the majority of their gatherings are like this, even to the extent that they may unjustly suspect and accuse people of things! So what is your advice to the likes of these youngsters, and with regards to encouraging them in seeking ‘Al-‘Ilm Ash-Shar’ee’, (knowledge of the religion), that which will protect them from the innovations?

A: The reality is that exaggeration in these affairs causes the student of knowledge to leave from the boundaries of the truth into argumentation and wasting time which results in no benefit.
Rather an individual should busy himself with the circles of knowledge. So this [exaggeration that leads to argumentation and wasting of time] is not appropriate! Rather it is binding upon the student of knowledge that he utilizes his time in the obedience of Allaah subhaanahu wa ta’aala, seeking knowledge and being present in the circles of knowledge.
And there is no problem in listening to the warnings of the scholars about the Hizbees, making clear their traits, such that one can be aware of them. But as for if we dedicate all of our time in speaking about them and not seeking knowledge that will benefit us, then this is no doubt a big and grave mistake!

Look for your Heart..

Abdullah ibn Mas'ood (May Allah ta'aala be pleased with him) said:

Look for your heart in three places: when listening to the Qur’an, when seeking knowledge (of Allah) and when in privacy. If you cannot find it in these places, then ask Allah (swt) to bless you with a heart, for indeed you have no heart.
